My thoughts on some of the coaching candidates on the early list to replace Thad Matta at Ohio State:
Billy Donovan, Oklahoma Thunder: Hey, his old pal Urban Meyer from their days coaching at the University of Florida is now quite at home in Columbus coaching the Buckeyes.
Chris Mack, Xavier: Guiding the Musketeers to seven NCAA tournaments in eight years puts him on the must-interview list. But seriously, does Ohio State
Gregg Marshall, Wichita State: Arguably, Marshall has turned down better jobs in recent years and next season’s Shockers could be his best team yet.
Sean Miller, Arizona: Simple reason why this won’t happen. Indiana just hired his younger brother Archie to coach the Hoosiers. I doubt Sean or Archie want to risk squaring off as much as three times a year (including Big Ten tourney).
Tom Crean, former Indiana coach: Two things, Crean is available and would be interested. And like Donovan, going to Ohio State would allow him to reunite with IU’s former football coach, Kevin Wilson. It’s also late in the game for OSU to be searching for a new basketball coach.
My favorite: Donovan. He won two NCAA titles at Florida and he’s learned just how tough it is to reach the NBA Finals. The Thunder took a step back this season after Kevin Durant bolted for the Golden State Warriors. With eight fewer regular season wins and a first-round playoff exit this season (Donovan is now 12-11 in the NBA postseason), I’m thinking he could be had if the Buckeyes are willing to fork over enough cash.
